While many of us do not really want to think about the possibility that we may have bed bugs in our mattresses if we are suffering from bug bites that do not seem to have a source this is a possibility we may need to consider. Bed bugs were pretty much eliminated during World War I by the used of DDT wide spread international travel is causing these bugs to reappear in our country. It may take some time for you to realize that you have bed bugs in your home as bed bugs symptoms do not always seem very obvious at first.
Bed bugs symptoms are very similar to that of fleas or mosquitoes with a few distinct differences that you should be aware of. Bed bug bites will of course itch and they will appear pink or red and either flat or raised. What is different about a bed bug bite is that you will see 3 or more bite holes in a line that form a pattern. This is because the bed bug will often move while it is feeding and make another hole.
Some people may notice no symptoms at all other than a bit of mild itching and symptoms may not show up until a few days later after a person has been bit. You may also feel a burning sensation which is a symptom that is also unique to bed bug bites. Itching and burning may be very mild or can be so severe that you may need t treat it with corticosteroids or an antihistamine. Some people can actually be allergic to bed bugs causing them to need further treatment but this is relatively rare.
Bed bugs are not hard to get rid of once you know that you have them, but you do need to be thorough when treating for them or get a professional exterminator to do it for you. The problem with bedbugs is that they can literally live anywhere there are stories of people need to tear their wall paper off their walls in an effort to get rid of them. You will need to search through all your furniture including in your drawers for signs of bedbugs as well to make sure that you get all of them. Bed bugs prefer wood over other materials to hide in so you will need to carefully inspect any wood furniture you may have.
After you have treated for bed bugs you should then be on the lookout for more bed bugs symptoms and signs to see if you got them all, often times it will take more than one treatment and it is also important if they come back to make sure you look for any place that you may have missed.
